HFU CHAPTER INITIATIVES

Chapter Initiatives

Across Hawaiʻi, our HFU chapters are building community-driven programs that strengthen local agriculture, support our farmers and ranchers, and increase food security island by island. From community farmers markets to shared agricultural equipment, these initiatives are created by chapter members who recognize local needs and work together toward local solutions. With support from both Hawaiʻi Farmers Union and the Hawaiʻi Farmers Union Foundation, these programs continue to grow as we invest in stronger agricultural communities across the state.

Chapter

Farmers Markets

Our chapter-led farmers markets create direct opportunities for local farmers, ranchers, food producers, and artisans to connect with their communities. These markets help keep food dollars local, improve access to fresh Hawaiʻi-grown products, and provide important economic opportunities for small agricultural producers. Each market reflects the unique needs and culture of its island community while supporting the larger mission of strengthening Hawaiʻi’s local food systems.

CHAPTER TOOL LIBRARIES

HFU chapters are also investing in shared agricultural equipment and tools that members can borrow and utilize for their farms and projects. These chapter tool libraries help reduce barriers for farmers, improve access to specialized equipment, and encourage collaborative agricultural solutions within our communities. These resources are especially valuable for small-scale farmers and beginning producers who may not otherwise have access to costly agricultural equipment.

The Kauaʻi chapter currently offers a Pig Brig Trap available for member use, supporting humane wild pig management efforts that help protect farms, crops, native ecosystems, and surrounding agricultural lands. On Molokaʻi, members have access to a BCS Tractor and a cardboard shredder, helping support regenerative agriculture practices, composting efforts, weed management, and small farm efficiency. The Lānaʻi chapter currently maintains a shared tractor available for member use to assist with land preparation, farming operations, and overall agricultural productivity on the island.

These chapter-led investments help strengthen local agriculture, build resilience within farming communities, and support long-term food security across Hawaiʻi.

Growing Together

All of these initiatives continue to evolve through chapter leadership, volunteer efforts, community partnerships, and member participation. HFU believes that investing directly into local chapters helps strengthen long-term agricultural resilience and food security throughout Hawaiʻi. As these programs grow, we look forward to expanding resources, increasing farmer support, and continuing to build stronger local food systems across our islands.
