HFUF PROGRAMS & INITIATIVES
Farmer Disaster Relief Initiative
Hawaiʻi Farmers Union and the Hawaiʻi Farmers Union Foundation have long stood alongside Hawaiʻi’s communities during times of crisis and disaster. Severe flooding, wildfires, extreme weather events, and other emergencies have continued to demonstrate how quickly disasters can impact farmers, ranchers, rural families, and Hawaiʻi’s local food system.
Through community partnerships and grassroots organizing, HFUF has supported disaster response and recovery efforts across the islands for the last decade. Following the 2023 Maui wildfires, HFU and HFUF President, Kaipo Kekona, helped establish a community response hub at Napili Noho in West Maui that distributed more than $10 million in critical supplies and thousands of pounds of fresh food to families in need.
In response to the 2026 widespread flooding and extreme weather across Hawaiʻi, HFUF launched the Hawaiʻi Flood Response Fund raising over $900,000 to help support impacted farmers and rural communities. The fund is helping provide immediate relief while supporting long-term recovery efforts for damaged farms, lost crops, equipment losses, and the restoration of local food production.
These disaster relief efforts reflect HFU’s continued commitment to strengthening community resilience, supporting local agriculture, and ensuring Hawaiʻi’s farmers have the resources needed to recover and continue feeding our islands.
